I'll swap you my sandwich for a packet of crisps...

My lovely friend Miai asked me to design a poster for a clothes swap at the pub she works for so here it is. I started hand stitching and realised this took me far far too long so managed to find a sewing machine and do it on that. If i could i would have done it all by hand as I'm pretty much scared of photoshop/Indesign but with help from Manda and Helen we worked some things out. THANK YOU.

Due to my absolutely rubbish Photoshop skills the 'Dirty Revolution' logo looks shocking(ly BAD) as i wanted to get rid of the white background...but I couldn't for some un known reason anyways...poster with logo and without.

I'm now going to make a W.I poster in the same style. lovely. But with less photoshop. BAIN OF MY LIFE. I think I'm going to just grow up to be a graphic designer *handmade only*....if only this was a possibility.

Well that's relatively exciting isn't it.

So Friday morning. my phone is ringing before my alarm goes off and its all a big hazy confusion as I work out how to turn off the ringing. Eventually I realise that I can't turn it off and I need to speak.

Its India, phoning to let me know that the Guardian want to speak to me. Its all very confusing for 8am.

Let me fill you in - India is the President of the first student based W.I (Women's Institute) at Goldsmiths University and recently I have decided to follow in her footsteps and set up a W.I here in Brighton along with Manda and Sophie. Having been to some of the meetings with India in New Cross, the possibilities of what you can organise to do are endless...so I'm getting pretty excited. I've got visions of jam making, cross stitching, screen printing, collaborations with Goldsmiths, trips to museums and general day trips, board game nights, film screenings, hankerchief embroidery, henna, book binding, baking, photography and lots of Christmassy things for the first few meetings... I will most definitely keep you updated on what we're up to.

But straight away we're being featured in the Guardian...eeeee. I have high hopes foe this W.I what we will do as a group of women and what we can learn from each other. ITS GOING TO BE ACE.

I look forward to looking back on this when Inz and I are OAP's and reminiscing on our youth. FRIENDS 4 LYF.

LET/THERE/BE/LIGHT

It seems rather appropriate that I'm posting this now seeing as it's bonfire night. It's probably one of my favourite times of year. Wrapping up warm, drinking hot cider and watching colourful explosions outside.

So our most current brief is an 'experimental' photography project with light. It's another collaborative project, wherein we've had to use a variety of different light sources to try and make some interesting images. The brief specified that we had to experiment with natural light, reflected light, studio light, torch/phone light, light in a pitch black room and so on and so forth.

I've had a lot of fun with my group, although 2 and half weeks seems quite long for a project like this. We've tried out a load of different techniques using water, ink, disco balls, Holga flashes, and night time park shoots. Here are a few of my favourite ones....

(oh and no photoshop involved. no no no)

*for added effect look at the first and fourth photos through both blue and read acetate...if you happen to have any to hand...*
These photos will also feature in my 'I LOVE LUKE' photo album.

ZINE FEST(IVITIES)

Last weekend I ventured back to New Cross (or 'The Cross' as people seem to refer to it...) and some how found myself sat in a cosy room above a pub, surrounded by stacks of magazines, scissors, glue, alcohol and friendly faces...Goldsmiths W.I having their first meeting of the term to which I had been invited to by India (what a doll)

Provided with simple zine templates and free to create anything I decided to make an 'Animal Zoo Zine'. Purely because I like animals.

but anyways...2 hours of general chit chat and minimal cutting and sticking and this is what I made...
(oh, I originally did this in colour...but photocopying makes things better.)

Poor old forgotten Moleskine..

Summer projects (ish)

First three images are my end results from "enjoy getting lost". Based losely around the idea "tagging" (ergh) I'm not a big fan of grafiti really but the idea of tagging sort of fascinates me. Someone feeling they need to leave a permanent mark portraying themselves behind. I got the idea from seeing signs in the natural environment when i got lost that someone had been there before me. (broken flowers...abandoned sweets etc) So i produced some temporary tags for people to find after I had been someone..representing a little something about me, essentially a "tag":/

The second project title I chose was "become a tourist in your own town". I've been wanting to go to Sweden for a long time now, so I thought 'where better to pretend to go?!'

Oxford became Stockholm and I became a tourist (in my own town) for the day.

(Sweden also because I've been reading Swedish Murder Mysteries and I fancy the detective)

I got myself a map of Stockholm, a tourists guide to the city and along with two lovely ladiezz (Irial and Darla) we became tourists in Sweden. We spoke swedish (ish), ask for directions, found tourist attractions (in people's gardens), asked for Swedish cuisine (in McDonalds) used the road map of Stockholm to the roads in Oxford and tried to book some rooms for the night in a hostel.

I recorded all the conversations on a hidden dictaphone so to try and create a piece of work from the conversations we had with baffled strangers.

"You're not in Oxford love not Stockholm"

"That's a map of Denmark, we're in Jolly Old England" (PAH)

"Are you lot on drugs? where are you getting them from because I want some of whatever you have."

"No. We only sell normal McDonalds food"

I wanted to create a zine like travel guide to Stockholm in Oxford. But pretty much ran out of time. FAIL. So just have a few postcard esque photos to portray the experience.

but yea enough of these rambles.

The winter nights are drawing in and its getting rather blustery outside.

I often miss being creative just for the sake of it or making things that haven't been set out by a brief . So Jodie and I have joined a craft club in brighton town.

'Felt Up Craft Club'. A place to meet, make and mend. Eat cake and listen to music oh and have a bit of a chat. We haven't actually made anything big or adventurous yet but this week we made some letters for a banner.

Jodie made the A and I made the B.

I'm hoping that practice makes perfect in craft club as im dreaming of making patchwork quilts, teacosies and scarfs for people i love. :)
