It's dissertation time and I'm finding it very hard to concentrate. When I have to write all I want to do is make things and when I have to design something I find myself wishing I was sat in the silent room of the library reading about books (My dissertation is about ebooks and the effect their increased use will have on the future of publishing...and some other things too, including references to mills&boon not forgetting Harry Potter) so when I do neither I go on the internet. Seeing as it was Christmas not too long ago I decided to take another dissertation break to make thank you cards. more luggage tags. I love luggage tags.

I'm determined to make as many books in my LAST TWO TERMS OF UNIVERSITY as possible. I'm hoping to set up my own little bookbinding studio and continue to make and experiment with book formats. These are a couple of designs I did at the end of last term and gave as Christmas presents. Most of my work is uploaded on my Cargo account HERE. I want to start selling my notebooks but I have no idea where to start? I'd love some feedback on what designs people like and whether an online shop might be better than Etsy?

Mini mini Christmas crafts update.

This year I made all my parents Christmas cards for them (making an angel stamp out of an eraser) - I'm taking orders for next year! Then I borrowed the lovely Hannah Bingham's badge maker (AGAIN!) to send festive merryment to all my favourite people!

One of my best friends got married the other week and along with Josephine Lister, we were bridesmaids! Fulfilling my bridesmaid duties I designed the invitations and order of service, which was great fun to do after a term full of computer based conceptual graphic design work!

Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011

I have just returned from the highlands after spending five days at the Fringe festival and realising how MUCH I love Edinburgh, not just for the shows over August but also for other things to do in and around the city.

*I also found this weekend from my Pa that my surname 'Edenbrow' was meant to be 'Edinburgh' but because of illiterate ancestors, when they moved away from Scotland it eventually became Edenbrow*

Climbing Arthur's Seat, which is the main peak of a group of hills in Holyrood Park, it's a relatively easy climb with the most amazing views of the city from the top!

Going to the beach at North Berwick. We had to wait two hours to get a train in the end, as the train doors weren't working then we missed another but it was DEFINITELY worth it and it only takes about half an hour to get there from Edinburgh. Its a small little town, with a beach, with very clear (cold) water and nice stones. (photos to follow)

Recently, whilst having a coffee with a friend we both discussed how we used to keep daily diaries as teenagers and how now we sometimes find ourselves of a lazy afternoon having a read back through them...

They might be full of quite embarrassing anecdotes and angsty rambles but they do look quite nice.

Hand drawn type is my housemate Mia Warner's thang (she's way good at it!). So I am always being shown amazing work (of hers and those who inspire her) making me continuously aware of great hand drawn stuff here there and everywhere, so here's a few gems I have found of recent.

How good is this book? I found it at home the other day while rummaging through my parents bookshelves. My dad's hand drawn type is PRETTY good it turns out.

home made envelopes using old 'flora&fauna' books

I love post.

I love receiving it and I love sending it. I love the stamps and I love the marks the sorting office print onto the envelope. I love re reading old letters and I've been recently collecting old envelopes and making them into notebooks. I also love an excuse to send excessive amounts of post so my birthday allowed me to do this both with invitations and thank you letters! At the top are some envelopes I made for thank you letters and underneath are the invitations. I sent pick'n'mix in candy striped paper bags!

It was my 21st this Easter Saturday and to celebrate we threw a tea party and I forced everyone to play rounders. Beforehand Josephine Lister and I spent all day baking over 100 cupcakes, which was pretttttyyyyy fun. We got relatively experimental with food dye making marble cup cakes and tye dye ones. but to make the colours VERY bright you have to use a lot of food dye, which weirds me out a bit.

I saw these beauties in San Francisco, at PUBLIC, beautifully simple design and their website holds a whole host of other accessories to buy. I especially love the saddle bags.

So imagine, my DELIGHT when the boy gave me my birthday present a little bit early....earghghhghghgkjfdgdfgdj so excited. It is a 1950's dutch bike, in pretty good condition along with a dynamo light on the front (im calling him spencer, even though it's quite a feminine bike). The plan is to do it up a bit and spray it any colour I wish. So what do you think? Pastel green? or the blue? hhhmmm. (picture of Spencer to follow! before and after his makeover!)

4. Spend a sunny day in Washington square park.

6. Try as many american sweets as possible, although a lot taste like TCP.
7. Keep a Journal.
8. Buy composition books.
9. Don't live in your guide book! ask the locals, where's best to eat and what's best to see.
10. Go to Haight and Mission district for thrift stores, bookstores, bakeries and good coffee.

how great are these watermelon inspired pom poms at ALL DAILY REPORT?! Along with such great knit wear that my housemate zoe would love.

I'm currently working on a project linked to my WI in extension studies at university (where I'm taking 'self publishing'). I'm learning how to knit type in the hope of creating book bands for a run of about 10 books linked to WI and Brighton University WI. I'll upload my progress.

I have spent most of my week bookbinding, making work books that I might be inspired to work in. These are sewn multi section notebooks with pockets at the back. The ribbon was given to me by the very lovely Bronwyn Opland, who graduated from Brighton last year and is now working as a prop maker for the window displays at Harvey Nics. We are old school pen pals and try to send each other nice things as and when we find them!

I made a travel journal to take with me before I went to San Francisco two weeks ago. I've always kept journals when going somewhere interesting. I keep them all together on a shelf back in Oxford, collecting dust but occasionally pull one down for a dose of nostalgia and insight into my 14 year old mind. I fi could just make note books and pom poms all day I think i would be happy...

Charity shops and countryside sales.

Oxford city centre is not the best for these kind of places but if you travel a little further afeild into the countryside there is an abundance of charity shops and sales.

But by far the best charity experience is that of the Sye Ryder hospice sale. Out in the sticks of Oxfordshire in a care home, it's outhouses are devoted to selling different items ranging from second hand clothes, linen, cameras&watches, kitchen ware, fabrics, frames, books etc etc and so on and so forth. The sale is becoming increasingly more popular every time I go so to get the best buys get there early. and this is not for the feint hearted it is best to know what you're going for and to keep ones wits about you - especially when it comes to clothes...middle aged women have not out grown bitchiness it seems...

It all finishes rather promptly at 12:30 so you have plenty of time to grab some lunch afterwards or if you fancy it a bacon butty from the van on your way out!

I'm determined to keep going with blogging lots of nice things for your eyes. So today seeing as im hiding away in oxfordshire (hoping that the academia in the air will somehow help me write my essay over the next week) I will be posting all things oxford based in case you fancy a visit....

1. BOOKSHOPS & LIBRARIES

Blackwells Art & Poster Shop (this is where I work when I am home!)
This shop has definitely contributed to me being interested in design and most probably in decided to study graphics. The shop is split over two levels and has books on a variety of genres within the arts . It also sells lots of lovely vintage posters, moleskine notebooks and Sukie stationary.

LOOK here is a cat that came into the shop while I was working on Christmas Eve.

Blackwells (the main shop across the road from the art and poster!)

The "Norrington Room", opened in 1966, contains more than 160000 books on 3+ miles of shelving. It is a little overwhelming but worth a visit just to see the vast amount of books! It also has a second hand

department on the top floor with lots of hidden gems...

Second hand bookshops. As oxford is the birth place of Oxfam, Oxfam bookshops are scattered all over Oxfordshire. with my two personal favourites in the centre of town on Turl Street and St Giles. but if you fancy travelling a little further out of town - Wantage has a fantastic Second hand bookshop off Wallingford Street. With colour co ordinated penguin editions and shelves of vintage linen maps!

Libraries

I have always been jealous of the oxford students and academics who get to use the Bodleian Library (one of the oldest libraries in Europe) to study in, mainly because of its vast array of books and journals and beautiful architecture! BUT I recently found out that during the holidays any student can sign up and use it, so I did! I have often felt a little out of depth wandering through the arts library (The Sackler Library) but just to even be able to walk around is a privilege. You even have to swear on oath that you wont burn the books before you're allowed in...

This year again, I wanted to make something instead of buying and sending christmas cards...so obviously I made teabags.

I bought some very fragrant and christmassy like tea from CARDEWS & CO - an independent coffee/tea merchant in Oxford, where I worked when I was 16.

I sewed together some muslin in a sort of teabag ish shape and filled them with some tea....probably a rather long process and I think some got lost in the post as I decided to post them in mini envelopes. but they looked nice in the end I think.

Golly golly gosh, I havent properly updated in a while. So prepare for some sort of visual overload. Maybe in a number of different posts but yes. This is the work I did for HANDMADE AND BOUND (a zine fair that we all trekked to a couple of weekends back in London) It was very busy and we managed to raise £300 as a yeargroup.Some 'How to Patchwork Zine' in (yet another) candy striped bag along with fabric and hexagonal template. Then some more pom poms. Lovely.

oh and my work is featured (ish) in a review of the event on JOTTA. along with MIA WARNER'S AND JAKE EVANS. (in the photo...)

A while back I posted about my summer project wherein I had to send a postcard to my tutor (rose) each week. I set up a screen printing studio in my old room and made 15 postcards...a sort of review card to give to the person I spent a specific date with. I did my summer project in one day...uh oh. but this is what I came up with!

I took photos of 'grids' I saw in the environment then used them as guides to create grids I can use in my designs...

I have two final outcomes for this piece, A3 fold out poster showing all 6 of my grids from specific images with text over them then a small book/zine thing showing all the 20 images I had collected.

Hayley Brown took our photos and now they're in a magazine.

We had to wear old but loved clothes and give a little background to the clothes... mine went as follows. (please excuse my writing skills I sound like an over excited 11 year old who had just learnt how to use exclamation marks...)

I bought the green cardigan from a vintage market in Oxford a couple of years ago and have continued to attempt to repair it a number of times. On both sleeves holes began to appear; then grow, and for some reason I thought the best way to repair this would be with bright red wool. I think I was feeling festive at the time (green and red!!!). The wool didn't really help much, so now I've just got a holey cardigan outlined in red but I've never thought to look for another one. I put this decision down to having to haggle for it and being quite pleased when I managed to get it for cheaper than it was priced!!!

My gorgeous and lovely friend (of now 10 years!!) has recently begun on her blogging adventure and started a culinary based blog.

Eve is a brilliant writer but also a culinary goddess and her blog not only gives us her own recipes to try out but she reviews places to eat as well! AND she does it all for £20 a week!!

"I’m a student and can’t spend more than £20 on my weekly shop. I do have to be quite strict (NB: ‘quite’) so, if I do splash out on something sumptuous, I’ll be living off Marmite toast for the rest of the week."

The blog is aimed at those wanting to spend less but eat well. So go and have a look for some kitchen inspiration!!

For our summer project we have been asked to send our tutor a postcard every week for the 15 weeks of our summer holiday.

The postards represent a specific day in comparison to the round up of a whole week, with the date printed on the front and a sort of review card on the back. The back of the postcard is to be filled in by the person I spend my day with and then placed in a bag that I will fill with things I collect//find//buy//steal throughout the day. So, it acts as a visual representation of my day.

Screen printin in my crak den.

So now that my mother has come and taken all my belongings away in anticipation of me moving back to Oxford for the summer, I found myself with a lot more space. So inspired by my recent encounterings with screen printing I contacted the lovely Mr Bird so to borrow all his screen printing stuff!

I turned my bed on its side and made my room into a mini screen printing studio for the week, whilst creating some not so perfect postcards for my summer project (seperate post to follow on this shortly!).

(3 minutes in the sun is definately the easiest way to expose a screen.)

Needless to say it took us more than a few tries to get the emulsion/light ratio correct and even when printing its all a bit hit and miss. but i hope that this gives my prints a bit of character...

WORK EXPERIENCE...

From 14th to 19th June I was on work Placement with the graphic designer/image maker Matt Wingfield.

Based in his studio in Hove I helped out with a window display for Harvey Nics.

Matt screen printed designs (such as light bulbs//pegs//scissors) onto a1 sheets of card which we then cut out into pattern pieces. We secured these pieces together with split pins to make an army of colourul mannequins.

The left one is one of Matts original Mannequins from college the right is an example of the ones we were making!

I learnt a lot from being on placement here about what kind of work i enjoy doing and how something can be produced and shipped out in a relatively short amount of time. I learnt that Hove looks exactly the same everywhere you go and getting lots is very easy. And also that you have to be entrepreneurial within the creative industry just to get ideas/businesses off the ground.

so for my personal project i set my heart on becoming an amazing film maker and knowing instantly how to edit film. this did not happen. but i did eventually make a little video (with the help of JAKE EVANS) and learnt sum final cut SKILLZ.

Having re done most of my projects for assessment this was the most fun re-working.

Working collaboratively with THOMAS SULLIVAN and MATTHEW DREYER we had to visually represent 5 words and then format them together in a book.

We played with the idea of a book and pretty much figured that almost everything is a book.

Mia the tiger was part of a semiotics project...trying to represent the idea of 'play'.

Isobel was for my most recent project 'Wake up Call'. I was focussing on the idea of how ipods can cause you to loose concentration when crossing roads. but i ended up just making some sort of image about domestic abuse. still like the image though and isobel looked pretty rad with a black eye.

Experimental mark making

a day of inventing and play.

Our group made drawing hats. The hats covered our eyes and music filled our ears. we then ventured into a drawing booth of doom to try and make interesting images with felt tips attached to our heads and arms and knees.

We developed our drawing techniques by making human puppets with three of us. we looked pretty silly but had lots of fun. even gary had a go.

This little exhibition I've been involved in is now coming to an end...This is what things looked like.

I exhibited my pom poms poster along with 3 zines i had been working on...one which kind of coincideds with the experimentation work we've been doing at college, using found imagery etc to create new pieces of work.

Then another presenting a collection of curious notes from the street which i have been collecting.

Then last of all my animal zoo zine. which is also on my blog further back.

The exhibition got extended because of its success! waaaaheeyyy. but I also found out the zines I had on display got knicked. So to the thieves ( if you happen to be reading this) YOU ARE PESKY. BUT I AM FLATTERED THAT YOU LIKED THEM ENOUGH TO POP THEM IN YOUR HANDBAG.

I'm trying to sort out my life and calm myself down by drinking hot ribena and wearing my HAND MADE un-kigu polar bear, which i fell asleep in last night by accident. My polar bear was initially meant for an "animals on holiday" themed party which was cancelled for the 3rd time last night, so we all got drunk at my house and went swimming in the sea.

I bitch about how I waste my life on it but I still check my facebook at regular intervals throughout the week/day. But at last I've decided that for a whole 40 days and nights to disconnect with my old/current friends in a bid to regain some time and hopefully be a little more productive at life.

With 3 days down it has become blindingly apparent how much time I spent on this social network OF DOOM, and it is a bit like cold turkey.

SO FAR I HAVE NOTICED A FEW THINGS:

> people TALK about facebook a lot without even realising it and when you're not on it, you can quite often become lost in conversations surrounding status updates/ stalking his/her ex /de tagging blbalblablabergh without having a clue what anyone is on about.
